Frozen – Olaf

Disney Movie characters are always popular as sand sculptures, and Frozen is one of their biggest hits. Children love Olaf! I make Olaf almost every summer, usually as a warm up to more complex designs. Olaf is a simple stable shape, and the only challenge is getting the proportions right.

Here are Olaf and Sven. Notice how nicely dried reeds and sticks work for arms and hair. And dried seaweed in the eyes makes them pop!

Olaf isn’t terribly difficult, but you have to get the proportions right.

One of my nieces, being named Anna, want me to do Princess Anna. Now, I’m obviously not a good enough artist to do human faces well, and this is my first and only attempt, soooo she does have a rather odd expression!

There was only enough time that day to do them as “reliefs”. When there is more time, you can continue to carve the sides. I almost always leave the back for stability.

A white seashell is Anna’s eye with a small black mussel shell for her pupils.

ANd now older, earlier attempts at Olaf. Like I said, practice makes perfect.
