After making this huge sand sculpture (5 ft tall, which is huge as a one-person project) I empathize with the people on Easter Island. It’s funny how few people know that the real name of an “Easter Island head” is “Moai”, or that Easter Island is part of the Galapagos group of islands in the south Pacific that Charles Darwin studied while sailing in “The Beagle” and developing his theories on evolution. Yet everyone recognizes the Moai, without knowing where they are from… or why they were made!
Then mere minutes (like 3 minutes) after I finished it and took these photos, half of it collapsed! Which kind of makes sense, since many of the original Moai were toppled, too!
Which reminds me; always take photos as you work!
Here’s the Moai at “Goofy Golf” (Mini-Golf) in Panama City Beach, Florida. You can actually climb the stairs inside and stand on the lookout platform at the top of the head!
